Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved teaching. My first memory of teaching was when I taught my little brother how to tie his shoes. “Make two bunny ears, then cross them, then one of them goes under the limbo, and pull!” I remember being so proud of him when he got it, and so proud of myself for teaching him.

At age 13, I started teaching violin students. My first student was just a few years younger than I, but I absolutely LOVED our lessons and put great concentration and effort into being the best teacher I could be. A few years later I was up to 20+ students, and reached a high of 46 students and three string ensembles before finally stepping back from teaching music a few years ago.

So teaching is in my blood. And now that I’ve shifted my focus to photography, and have hundreds and hundreds of hours of experience under my belt, I am excited to be offering one-on-one coaching sessions for photographers!

I started my business like many photographers do, with no formal education and very little understanding of how to run a business. I made a lot of mistakes along the way, read everything I could get my hands on, researched, practiced, learned from other photographers, and now I find myself here, with a successful business and enjoying every minute of it. I do NOT claim to know everything nor do I claim that my methods are the only methods that work. But I love how sharing what I’ve learned (much of it the hard way!) can really serve other photographers who are on the same journey, and I’m eager to do more of these coaching sessions.

The goal is to focus the session on YOU and what you want to learn. We can talk about technical things like: exposure, lighting, metering, composition, focus, posing, client interaction, working with young children, workflow, and post-processing. We can talk about business things like: branding, marketing, pricing, portfolio-building, selling, and creating a business plan. I can critique your images or suggest ways to strengthen your portfolio or website. For the half and full-day sessions, we actually go outside and shoot a session together, so we can practice finding the light and using it to your advantage, as well as get hands-on practice with technical things and client interaction.

Every coaching experience also includes access to me before and after your session, so you can ask any questions that come up and send me images to critique as you try out different techniques. The half and full-day sessions also include a short head shot session, so you have new beautiful images of yourself to use on your website and marketing materials.

I want you to come away inspired, motivated, and enabled to produce stronger images and run a more successful, profitable business. My goal is really to see you succeed, so I’m going to do everything I can to give you the tools to get where you want to go and pursue your goals. Contact me at rachael@rachaelboerphotography.com if you’d like to book a coaching session or have any questions at all!

2 hour session (in-person or via Skype) – $275

  • 2 hours to discuss any aspect of business or technique you’d like to cover. Includes pre- and post-session access to me by email with any additional questions. Can include topics such as image critique, post-processing, workflow, business management, marketing, sales, etc.

  • 5 hours to discuss any aspect of business or technique you’d like to cover. Includes pre- and post-session access to me by email with any additional questions.

“I couldn’t believe how much Rachael packed into our mentoring session.  She covered just about every aspect of my photography and marketing in such a short time.  The personalized advice was just what I needed to pinpoint areas to improve, and her energy is so motivating.  I’m so excited to get to work on the things we talked about and watch my style and business grow!”

-Kayla, Florida

“Aspiring photographers could not ask for a better mentor than Rachael.  Not only is Rachael an amazingly talented photographer (as is evident from her portfolio), but she is also a gifted teacher.  She is extremely patient, incredibly generous with her knowledge of all aspects of the photography business, and very skilled at (and very amenable to) tailoring her mentoring sessions to her mentees’ particular experience level and objectives.  My photography business has benefited tremendously from Rachael’s invaluable guidance, and I cannot recommend her mentoring services highly enough!”

-Tina, Maryland

“Rachael was thorough, honest and so very generous with sharing her ideas and experience.  Her advice and suggestions were exactly what I needed to take my business further.”

-Michelle, Australia

“Coaching from Rachael is the best investment I have made in my business to date!  Rachael provided invaluable feedback and guidance that improved the quality of my photographs dramatically and helped to take my business to the next level.  She continually goes above and beyond to support her students because she genuinely cares about their success.  I will forever be a huge fan of Rachaels and feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from her.”

-Kelly, Maryland

*At this time, coaching sessions are available for female photographers or for couples who run their business together. Both in-person and Skype sessions are available to photographers at least 50 miles outside the Washington, D.C. area. In-person coaching will take place near Gaithersburg, MD and can be split up into several sessions if desired.

This winter marked three years that I’ve called myself a photographer. Three years of dreaming, learning, growing, reading, studying, practicing, and (slowly but surely) improving. I’ve loved every minute of it.

And since I’m always trying to grow, I pay a lot of attention to what the “experts” say about how to run a successful business. I’ve studied my craft, developed a cohesive brand, geared my offerings toward my target market, run my numbers, and defined my niche. That last one is a big one in the photography world. “Specialize!” they always say. “Don’t shoot everything!” “Define a narrow specialty and be known for that one thing.” “Don’t spread yourself too thin. You can’t shoot everything well, so choose what you love most and specialize in it.”

So specialize I have. I’ve focused my efforts almost completely on photographing babies and young children (and their families). I AM passionate about this and I DO love it and it’s been a wonderful ride. Give me a two-year-old and a newborn and I’m happy as a clam. It’s what I do best right now and I love making my clients happy and giving them great pictures of their babies and young kids.

But in the past few months I’ve realized something. I don’t want to specialize quite so much.

I want to shoot engagements and weddings. I want to shoot seniors and corporate head shots. I want to shoot video and bands and births and birthday parties. I want to shoot commercial work. My dream is to someday shoot for children’s clothing catalogs. I know I am a long way off from being able to do all these things equally well, but that’s why I’m currently investing in more education, learning new software, buying new gear, practicing new skills like off-camera lighting and video editing. It’s why I’m reaching out to other photographers to learn from them, shadow them as they work, and ask so many questions I’m sure they sigh when they see my email address pop up in their inbox yet again.

I get the reasoning behind specializing, but for me, a major reason I do photography is because it’s my creative outlet. And I feel like my creativity gets stifled if I’m only shooting ONE thing. I still want to photograph babies and young kids, don’t get me wrong, but I want to do much, much more than that. And I want to do it well.

So I’m letting you in on this now, because you all have been so supportive and wonderful through this journey and I know you’ll be supportive about this decision too. I’m hoping to develop a strong wedding portfolio within the coming months by assisting other photographers, and start taking on my own weddings at some point in the near future. I’m hoping to photograph more senior portraits this spring. I am working on growing my video skills to the point where I can make promo videos for local companies and non-profits. I’m also continuing to teach and expand that area with more one-on-one coaching sessions and maybe even a workshop for more advanced photographers. I want to get to the point where people from around the world hire me for weddings or portraits, and I go on these destination shoots with one or two of my children tagging along, as a way to show them the world.

These are big dreams, I know. But that’s who I am. It’s what I do. I dream big.

My number one priorities in life are my faith and my family. They will always come first. But during what little time I have, when the house is quiet and three children are peacefully tucked under warm blankets, I’m going to keep throwing myself into learning and growing and un-specializing, little by little. I think that by pursuing excellence in all kinds of photography, I can bring glory to God, serve my family, AND continue to make my clients happy.

I’m grateful for the ability to pursue these dreams and appreciate every one of you. Each kind comment you make, each referral, each “like” on my Facebook page means a lot as I continue to grow. Here’s to a creative, fulfilling 2013!

This is going to be a bit more personal than what I usually post on this blog. But I couldn’t pass up the opportunity today to honor my husband for being such an incredible father.

Ken, when I married you 5 years ago I figured you would be a great Dad but I had no idea just how great you would be.

The kids absolutely LOVE being with you. Their smiles light up the room when you come home each night. (“SURPRISE!!”)

To get Amelia out of a bad mood, all I have to do is tell her tomorrow is a “Daddy day” and she’s instantly all smiles. You’ve definitely won their hearts.

You also are faithful to teach them God’s ways and care for their little souls. I love listening you read the bible to them every night and answer their questions about heaven. I love how you patiently teach them to obey and pray for them before you leave for work.

You have a great sense of humor and it comes out most when you’re being goofy with the kids. Mimi always tells me, “My dad is SOOO funny! He’s always doing silly jokes with me!”

You invest so much time in playing with them, reading with them, and exploring new things with them. Even after a long day at work you’re never too tired to give Carter a piano lesson or kick a ball around with Amelia or push Luke on the swing.

You encourage me when parenting gets tough and you trust God for the grace to train our little ones.

I could not be more grateful for you, or have ever asked for a better father for my children. Thank you for all you do for them and for me. We love you!

Happy Father’s Day!!!

Two and a half weeks ago, I arrived in Durham, NC (by myself!) after a (very quiet!) 5 hour drive, to attend a portrait photography workshop (by myself!) with the incredible Tamara Lackey of Tamara Lackey Photography. Have I mentioned how amazing it was to be doing this with no children in tow? Don’t get me wrong – I love my kids – but it was such a luxury to spend a few days away, focused entirely on learning and growing, without being responsible for anyone but me. I believe I didn’t hear the “Dora the Explorer” theme song the entire 3 days I was there!

The workshop itself was wonderful. It was everything I hoped for and more. Tamara is so warm and personable, and immediately made us all 15 of us students feel at home. We enjoyed yummy (vegetarian) meals together, talked for hours about technique, interaction with subjects, post-processing, marketing, branding, and everything in-between.

One of the best parts was the time we spent watching Tamara work with children. She somehow managed to interact and engage with them while calling out camera settings to us, answering questions, and explaining the choices she was making in lighting and posing. Talk about multi-tasking!

I snapped a few photos during this portion, but didn’t make a point of avoiding the other students’ bodies in my shots, so most of the photos look like the one below. :)

I like this one. Tamara in action.

Tamara posing a sweet brother-sister pair. (By the way, am I the only one who thinks it’s awesome that Tamara rhymes with camera?)

Here’s a peek at the resulting image.

All the kids did great, especially considering this was what they were confronted with!

I was so grateful for the time away to focus on learning  and growing. For someone who has learned almost everything I know from reading (hours and hours and hours of reading), it was so refreshing to get feedback on my work and talk face-to-face with other photographers who are just as passionate as I am about what we do. I think at least once a year I’m going to try to do something like this to further my education and develop my skills. Getting a 3-day break from Dora the Explorer once a year sounds awfully nice too.

Photographers, if you work with children and families and are looking for a great workshop, be sure to check out Tamara’s!

Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard of Pinterest.

Raise your hand if you’re hopelessly addicted to Pinterest.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Pinterest is a site where you can create virtual bulletin boards in different categories (recipes, clothing, home decorating, etc) and then “pin” pictures and articles that you come across as you’re browsing the web. So, for instance, if I see a tasty recipe on a blog, I’ll pin it to my “recipes” board on Pinterest to remind myself to try it later. Then, when I’m searching for dinner ideas, I just have to glance at that board and I have all kinds of great options saved there.

(Yeah, it tends to be kind of a girl thing. I mean, I suppose you could pin links to baseball stats and fishing products, but I haven’t seen much of that…)

The other reason it’s addicting is you can also view a board called “everything,” which shows you all the pins that other users are currently pinning (it’s a huge board, and constantly changing). I just signed on to that board and saw links to a movie about mountain climbers, an article called “101 rainy day activities for toddlers,” a handmade necklace, a tutorial for painting wall art in a nursery, and a recipe for dark chocolate chunk bread pudding (yum).

Seriously addicting.

But my favorite thing to do on pinterest is to use it to gain inspiration from looking at other photographer’s pictures. Go on there and type in “photography” and there are just piles and piles of amazing images to peruse. Each one links back to the original artist’s website or blog, so you can see more of their stuff if you are interested.

Ok, if you’re not a photographer, you may NOT be interested, I suppose. But for me, I could do this all day.

Some people say you shouldn’t look at others’ work because it encourages copycatting rather than coming up with your own creative ideas. But I think of it kind of like music… the more you listen to the masters (Bach, Beethoven), the more you understand about the art and come away prepared to create it and put your own spin on it. In the several years I’ve been shooting, I’ve learned SO MUCH from studying other photographers’ work. For someone with no formal training, this has been one of the main ways I’ve learned and improved as a photographer.

I wanted to share a couple of my favorites with you today! Photographers, if you’re not familiar with these folks, check them out!

1. Bobbi + Mike

This is a husband and wife team from Indianapolis, IN. They are a fun, energetic couple with a photography style I just LOVE. Seriously. If my work was half as good as theirs I would be thrilled. Their family stuff in particular is amazing. Check out this post to see their top 10 family images from 2011.

The other great thing about them is that they post (often hilarious) behind-the-scenes shots from each of their sessions. For me it can be educational – you can get an idea of how they achieved specific shots by seeing the behind-the-scenes view.

2. Amelia Lyon

Aside from the fact that she has a beautiful name, Amelia Lyon is one of my all-time favorites right now. She and her hubby Justin are located in California and do amazing work in both weddings and portraits. Check out this post for some of their best from 2011.

Side note: how awesome is it that there are a lot of husband-wife teams out there who get to shoot together for a living? Man, that sounds fun. Maybe I can talk Ken into joining me one of these days. :)

3. Pinkle Toes Photography

Michele Anderson runs Pinkle Toes Photography out of Austin, TX. Her newborn and family work is great; so vibrant, colorful, and full of joy.

4. Melissa Jill

In Phoenix, AZ, Melissa Jill does wedding and portrait photography that is to die for. I love her simple, clean style and also the amazing “photographer resources” section of her website. On her blog, she writes from the heart, sharing details about her personal life, faith in Christ, and other things which make you really feel like you know her. I love these baby and family sessions in particular.

There are many others but these are just a few of my favorites who inspire me and help me push myself every day to get better at what I do.

And seriously. If you’re not on Pinterest, you should be. Or, on second thought, only take that advice if you’ve got an extra hour or two per day you really want to squander with an addictive online habit. :)
